The Club Arans Weekend - April 1999

The Backpackers Club Arans weekend took place over the May Bank Holiday weekend, arranged by Welsh member Ian Hawkins of Welshpool.

Most members stayed out for the whole three days - apart from Ian, who found he had to work some of the Saturday! Most ignored Ian's suggested route, and took in the hills at the head of Dyfi Forest, pitching within reach of the Cross Foxes Inn.

The 14 participants split into groups of 4, 2, 2, 1, and 5 who split into 3 & 2 later in the day. Bob & Rob intended a totally different route over the Rhobells as well as the Arans, and were not seen again by the others.

Saturday's weather was comfortably warm, inducing plenty of 'lingering' time, at one time we sat on a hilltop watching a car rally in Dyfi Forest. Sunday was still warm, but very hazy. We could not see Aran Fawddwy until nearly at the summit. Mike had left us to walk over Cadair Idris to the coast for his train home.

Monday was much clearer with good views of Cadair Idris, the Rhinogs, the Berwyns and Plynlimon with a lot more excuses for lingering.
